Old Business
Update on displays with signs. Marlene has noticed signs posted after the information had been sent to business owners. Mike will check with zoning to see if notification has gone out.
Yanks (Volunteer) Park has been neglected and needs to be attended to. Next spring we will discuss how we will maintain this park.
New Business
Yvonne showed slides of the Washington Township beds. She explained the plantings and emphasized the need to be fiscally sound with plant decisions.
Discussion ensued regarding the plantings for next year. Several suggestions were put forward. Yvonne explained her recommendations and reiterated the need to adhere to fiscal constraints. Several members would like to see Cannas introduced again next year. Marlene suggested we save some of the potato vines and coleus (need to be by cuttings) for next year’s bed. There was discussion about where these would be housed over winter. They will need light and a warm temperature. Yvonne instructed the committee on the correct method for completing the cuttings. Cynthia suggested that Hithergreen be a test site for cultivation of these cuttings.
Yvonne showed slides of the nominated properties. Discussion ensued regarding that we should consider different considerations for commercial/businesses and recognized separately from home owners. There may have to be a different signage provided for businesses. The committee will take this issue into consideration. The committee needs to have a conversation about how to nominate and recognize businesses. Kathy suggested that we send a certificate to those businesses that are nominated each year but do not win. Further discussion will be held on this matter in future meetings.
Yvonne noted that a landscape business needs to have a different standard for beautification awards. Yvonne has agreed to speak to Jim Teske regarding his dissatisfaction about the procedures for awards.
The committee voted to award eight Beautification Awards.
